LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved the deployment of 1,500 electric buses across 91 tehsils from January 2027, as part of a major expansion of its public transport programme.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved dedicated electric-bus depots for each participating tehsil, while the first batch of vehicles is expected to reach Lahore in January. The provincial government says it ultimately intends to have 3,000 electric buses operating across Punjab by June 2027.
Under the distribution plan, 215 buses will go to 11 tehsils of Bahawalpur, 202 to 12 tehsils of Faisalabad, 169 to nine tehsils of Multan, 125 to seven tehsils of Gujranwala and 122 to eight tehsils of Gujrat. Rawalpindi division’s 16 tehsils are expected to receive 219 buses.
Officials told the meeting that 612 electric buses are already operating in different districts, while another 192 are expected to enter service shortly. Work is also continuing on mass-transit projects in Faisalabad and Gujranwala and on the rehabilitation of 25 Lahore Metrobus stations.
