NEW DELHI: At least six people were rescued after a multi-storey residential building collapsed in the Indian capital on Sunday, prompting a major emergency operation as authorities searched the rubble for possible additional victims.
The collapse occurred in Delhi’s Bapa Nagar area, according to Indian news agency ANI. Police, firefighters and other emergency personnel were deployed to the scene soon afterwards.
Rescue teams pulled six people alive from the debris and transported them to hospital for treatment.
Authorities were continuing to search the site amid concern that other people could remain trapped beneath the wreckage.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately established, and officials had not provided a confirmed figure for how many people were inside the building when it came down.
Building collapses occur periodically in densely populated parts of Delhi and other Indian cities, particularly involving older or illegally modified structures, although authorities had not established whether any such factors played a role in Sunday’s incident.
