London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been convicted and fined for keeping an untaxed vehicle, despite City Hall saying the 24-year-old car does not belong to either the mayor or Transport for London (TfL).
Khan, 55, was found guilty last month of keeping an unlicensed Nissan Micra following a prosecution brought by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), according to British media reports.
The case was dealt with through the Single Justice Procedure in Herefordshire, with Khan convicted in his absence. He was ordered to pay a £220 fine, £85 in costs and £35.84 in outstanding vehicle tax.
The circumstances surrounding the prosecution appear unusual. Court documents reportedly show that correspondence addressed to Khan over the unpaid tax was sent to celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant in east London, rather than to nearby TfL offices.
City Hall officials said the vehicle at the centre of the case belongs to neither Khan nor TfL.
The Nissan Micra was first registered 24 years ago, with its annual vehicle tax reportedly expiring in September 2025. The lapse subsequently led to the DVLA prosecution.
The case raises questions over how the vehicle came to be associated with the London mayor and why official correspondence concerning it was sent to an unrelated restaurant.
