Iran has conveyed its conditions regarding the Strait of Hormuz to the United States through Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Tuesday.
Citing a source close to Iran’s negotiating team, Tasnim said Munir’s visit to Tehran was not intended to convey a threat, but to communicate Iran’s position and help create conditions for possible negotiations with Washington.
The source said Tehran’s position was clearly communicated to the Pakistani delegation during meetings attended by Munir.
According to the report, Iran is demanding that the United States return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and implement its provisions, particularly Article 5 concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
Under Article 5, Iran would ensure the safe passage of commercial shipping through the strategic waterway and consult Oman on arrangements for its future management, including maritime services.
Munir visited Tehran on Monday and held talks with senior Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and National Security Secretary Mohsen Rezaei.
The United States and Iran signed the Islamabad MoU in mid-June following mediation by Pakistan and Qatar, but implementation subsequently stalled amid disagreements over arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
The diplomatic initiative followed the outbreak of hostilities in late February, when the United States and Israel attacked Iran and Tehran responded with strikes against Israeli and US military targets in the region.
Fighting resumed last month after Washington renewed military attacks on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate against US military assets in several Arab states allied with Washington.
