Humanoid Robot Takes on Former Tennis Champion in Beijing Match

Jarida Report

A humanoid robot impressed spectators in Beijing by rallying with former tennis champion Zheng Jie in what organisers billed as the world’s first singles tennis match between a human and a robot.

The exhibition took place on Saturday during the opening of the second World Humanoid Robot Sports Games, according to local media.

Zheng faced a humanoid robot developed by Chinese robotics company Galbot, which demonstrated its ability to move around the court, play forehand and backhand shots and respond to slices and spin during rallies.

The robot also produced serves exceeding 100 kilometres per hour and was able to react to shots in real time as it competed against the former Chinese tennis star.

One of the most striking moments came when the robot fell during play but managed to get back on its feet independently and resume the match.

The demonstration highlighted advances in humanoid robotics, particularly the combination of rapid visual processing, balance, movement and real-time decision-making required to compete in a fast-moving sport such as tennis.
