Monaco to Release Paul Pogba After Injury-Hit Comeback

Jarida Report

Former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba is set to leave Monaco, with the French club announcing on Wednesday that it will end his contract following an injury-plagued season.

The 33-year-old France international, who helped his country win the 2018 World Cup, had been attempting to rebuild his career after serving an 18-month doping suspension.

Monaco said the objectives established when Pogba joined the club had been “only partially achieved”, leading both sides to bring his contract, which was due to run until June 2027, to an early end.

Pogba is currently sidelined by a thigh injury, having only recently recovered from a knee problem. He managed just six Ligue 1 appearances last season, totalling 115 minutes.

Despite his limited playing time, Monaco praised Pogba’s professionalism, describing his mindset and determination as remarkable. The club said he had also made a positive contribution off the pitch by sharing his extensive experience with teammates.

Pogba acknowledged that he had not been able to play as frequently as he had hoped and thanked Monaco’s president, management, coaching staff, teammates and supporters for their backing.

The midfielder enjoyed the most successful years of his club career with Juventus and Manchester United. He made 233 appearances across two spells at United and won four Serie A titles with Juventus, where he was also named the league’s player of the year.

Pogba was also a key member of the France side that lifted the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

His career was disrupted after he tested positive for testosterone while at Juventus in 2023. Initially handed a four-year suspension, Pogba successfully appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which reduced the ban to 18 months.

He joined Monaco last year following the completion of his suspension, hoping to revive his career in Ligue 1, but persistent injuries severely limited his return to competitive football.
