The federal government on Wednesday filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against its decision allowing incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan to be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for medical assessment and treatment.
The petition was submitted through the Islamabad chief commissioner, a day after the Supreme Court directed that the former prime minister be shifted to the private hospital and examined by a multidisciplinary medical board.
The government’s move follows comments by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, who said authorities would explore legal options regarding the court’s order. He also accused the PTI of politicising Imran’s health despite the court’s directions.
The Supreme Court issued the order on Tuesday after considering reports from a medical board and the Adiala Jail superintendent concerning Imran’s health.
The reports highlighted concerns over his fluctuating blood pressure and anxiety and recommended that he be allowed more frequent meetings with his wife and immediate family as part of efforts to reduce stress.
Speaking at a press briefing alongside Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Tarar maintained that the government had never sought to politicise Imran’s medical condition and acknowledged his legal right to receive appropriate treatment.
However, he said authorities had concerns over the legal implications of transferring a prisoner to a private medical facility and intended to seek further guidance from the Supreme Court.
The review petition now asks the court to reconsider its order permitting Imran’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital.
