The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission has announced that elections for eight reserved seats in the Legislative Assembly will be held on August 24, a day after the main electoral process for the 2026 general elections was completed.
According to the schedule issued by the commission, candidates can submit nomination papers until August 20. The returning officer will scrutinise the nominations the same day and publish a list of eligible candidates.
Challenges to nomination papers can be filed on August 21, with the Election Commission scheduled to hear and decide those appeals on August 22.
The final list of candidates will be released on August 23, followed by voting for the eight reserved seats the next day.
The announcement follows the completion of voting in the two outstanding Bagh constituencies, where re-polling was conducted at 23 polling stations in LA-15 Bagh-II and LA-16 Bagh-III.
Those results brought the main three-phase election process across AJK to a close, with the PML-N emerging as the largest party in the Legislative Assembly with 25 directly elected seats. The PPP finished second with 12.
The outcome has placed the PML-N in a strong position to form the next AJK government, while the upcoming reserved-seat elections will determine the parties’ final strength in the assembly.
