Marvel Studios has finally lifted the curtain on its highly anticipated X-Men reboot, unveiling the film’s principal cast at this year’s D23 convention.
D23 has become an important platform for major Disney and Marvel announcements, with the 2024 event previously showcasing projects including Captain America: Brave New World, Agatha All Along, Fantastic Four: First Steps and Daredevil: Born Again.
Expectations were particularly high this year following a string of announcements at San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel had already revealed that Shawn Levy will direct a Ghost Rider film starring Ryan Gosling, while David Jonsson will appear in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther III. A new Avengers: Doomsday trailer was also shown at the event.
Attention at D23, however, shifted firmly towards Marvel’s mutants.
The new X-Men, directed by Thunderbolts* filmmaker Jake Schreier, will introduce a new generation of actors as Marvel’s team of mutant superheroes.
Marvel announced that the cast includes Sadie Sink, Samara Weaving, Adam Driver, Christopher Abbott, Inde Navarrette, Maya Boyd and Kit Connor.
Sink will portray Jean Grey, whose introduction in Spider-Man: Brand New Day helped establish mutants within the MCU, while Weaving will play telepath Emma Frost.
Abbott has been cast as Professor Charles Xavier, founder of the school that provides young mutants with a refuge and helps them understand their abilities. Driver will take on the villainous role of scientist Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister.
Connor will portray Scott Summers/Cyclops, while Navarrette has been cast as Rogue and Boyd will play the weather-controlling Storm.
The arrival of a dedicated X-Men movie has been anticipated since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and gained control of the screen rights to the characters. Following the MCU introduction of the Fantastic Four last year, the mutants are now set to receive their own full-scale debut.
Marvel Studios’ X-Men is scheduled to reach cinemas on May 5, 2028.
