The Israeli military said on Sunday that it had killed Abu Hassan Alaa, described as a senior Hezbollah commander, in an airstrike on Lebanon’s southern municipality of Ansar.
In a statement posted on X, the Israeli army identified Alaa as a senior commander in Hezbollah’s “Badder Unit” and said the strike targeted what it described as a main headquarters belonging to the Lebanese group.
Israel claimed the attack was carried out in response to Hezbollah activity against Israeli forces in what it calls the “Security Zone.”
Hezbollah had not immediately responded to the Israeli military’s announcement or confirmed Alaa’s death.
The claim follows an incident on Saturday in which the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said three Israeli soldiers had been seriously wounded in an attack near the Lebanese border that it attributed to Hezbollah.
The latest developments come amid an intensification of Israeli strikes on Lebanon, despite a framework agreement between Beirut and Tel Aviv providing for a phased Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and continued negotiations between the two sides.
Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon has continued despite months of diplomatic negotiations. According to Lebanese authorities, the fighting since March 2 has killed at least 4,335 people, wounded 12,277 and displaced more than one million.
