A group of United Nations human rights experts has called on Canada to take all possible measures to protect Sikh activist Moninder Singh, who has repeatedly been warned by Canadian authorities of credible threats to his life.
In a letter sent to the Canadian government on June 3 and made public two months later under standard UN procedures, the five independent experts expressed concern over allegations of foreign intimidation and reprisals targeting Singh, a Canadian citizen.
The letter noted that since 2022, Singh has received four “duty to warn” notices from Canadian authorities informing him of credible and imminent threats to his life.
The experts urged Canada to take all feasible steps to protect Singh, his family and others facing similar threats on Canadian soil.
They also called on the authorities to expedite investigations, hold those responsible accountable, provide effective remedies to victims, and take measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
The letter was signed by the UN Special Rapporteurs on human rights while countering terrorism, freedom of peaceful assembly, human rights defenders, and freedom of religion, along with the Independent Expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order.
The UN experts serve in an independent capacity and do not speak on behalf of the United Nations. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Indian government.
