Egypt said on Saturday that investigations are continuing into the incident involving two gas vessels at Damietta Port, as authorities work to determine who was responsible.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry dismissed what it described as “inaccurate and false reports” published by some foreign media outlets regarding the incident.
“The investigations are still ongoing to determine all the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify the party responsible,” the ministry said.
It urged international media organisations and correspondents to verify information through official Egyptian sources when reporting on the incident.
The statement follows remarks by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Thursday, who confirmed that authorities were investigating the attack and called for regional de-escalation to prevent further deterioration of the security situation.
On Wednesday, Egypt’s Petroleum Ministry reported a fire aboard two gas vessels at Damietta Port without identifying the cause. However, British maritime security firm Ambrey said the vessels had been targeted in a drone attack, identifying one of them as a US-owned, Marshall Islands-flagged floating liquefied natural gas storage facility.
Asked about the incident, US President Donald Trump said Washington would respond to Iran “very strongly,” though no official determination has been made regarding responsibility for the attack.
