India on Thursday confirmed that 16 of its nationals, including 10 seafarers, have been killed in the Middle East since the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict in late February.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said 75 Indian citizens had also been injured during the conflict, with the highest number of casualties reported in the United Arab Emirates, where 32 people were hurt.
The ministry also reported a separate incident unrelated to the conflict in which 12 Indian nationals were killed at the Ras Laffan gas facility in Qatar.
The conflict began after the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military campaign against Iran, carrying out nearly 900 coordinated airstrikes targeting government buildings, military installations, missile infrastructure and air defence systems.
According to the figures cited by India, more than 3,300 people have been killed in Iran, while tens of thousands have been displaced by the fighting. The conflict has also claimed the lives of at least 12 US military personnel, with dozens more reported injured.
The war has affected citizens of several Asian and regional countries, prompting governments to monitor the safety of their nationals and coordinate evacuation and consular assistance where necessary.
