Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Tuesday that the death toll from monsoon rains, flash floods and landslides has risen to 110 since the start of the rainy season.
During a briefing to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the NDMA said 360 people had been injured in weather-related incidents since June 26, while nearly 800 houses had been damaged nationwide.
The highest number of fatalities was reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, followed by Punjab, the authority said.
The NDMA also warned that several northern regions could face flash floods and glacial lake outburst floods over the coming month as rising temperatures accelerate glacier melt.
Prime Minister Shehbaz directed authorities to deploy all available resources, including early warning systems, to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall and flooding and improve emergency preparedness.
Pakistan experiences heavy monsoon rainfall each year, typically between late June and September, with the season frequently causing widespread flooding, casualties and damage to infrastructure.
Weather authorities have forecast another spell of heavy rain across parts of northern and southern Pakistan over the next two days.
