Pakistan’s Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Center has successfully performed the country’s first chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy, marking a significant milestone in the treatment of blood cancers.
According to state broadcaster Radio Pakistan, the procedure was carried out following years of research and development by specialists from the Army Medical Corps.
A 21-year-old patient has reportedly made a full recovery after undergoing the treatment. The broadcaster said the patient and family showed resilience throughout the treatment process.
CAR-T cell therapy involves genetically modifying a patient’s immune cells to identify and destroy cancer cells. The treatment is primarily used for certain blood cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
The successful procedure places Pakistan among the countries capable of offering advanced CAR-T cell therapy and reflects the country’s growing expertise in specialised cancer treatment.
