US Supreme Court Blocks Trump’s Bid to Restrict Birthright Citizenship

Jarida Report

The US Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected President Donald Trump’s bid to restrict birthright citizenship, dealing a major blow to one of his flagship immigration policies.

In a 6-3 ruling, the court upheld a lower court’s decision blocking Trump’s executive order, which sought to deny automatic US citizenship to children born in the country if neither parent is a US citizen or a lawful permanent resident (green card holder).

The ruling marks the second major setback for the Trump administration at the Supreme Court this year, following the court’s February decision to strike down his sweeping global tariff policy.

Opponents of the executive order argued that it violates the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to people born in the United States who are “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.”
