Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering struggle to promote democracy in Venezuela. The Nobel Committee lauded her “tireless work for democratic rights and peaceful resistance” against authoritarianism.
She was selected from among 338 nominations — 244 individuals and 94 organisations — and stood out for her peaceful defiance against Venezuela’s authoritarian rule, enduring years of political persecution while continuing to advocate democratic reform and civic courage.
