Monsoon Rains Trigger Deadly Floods and Landslides in Northeast India

Jarida Report

Torrential monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across northeastern India, leading to severe flooding and landslides that have resulted in the deaths of at least 32 people over the past 24 hours. The states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland have been particularly affected.

  • Assam: The Brahmaputra River overflowed, submerging 175 villages across 12 districts and affecting over 58,000 residents. Eight fatalities have been reported, primarily due to landslides and flooding.
  • Arunachal Pradesh: Nine people lost their lives in landslides, including seven from a single family whose vehicle was swept into a gorge in East Kameng district.
  • Meghalaya: Seven deaths have been reported, caused by incidents such as lightning strikes, falling trees, and drowning.
  • Mizoram: A landslide led to the collapse of a hotel, resulting in six fatalities, including three individuals from Myanmar.
  • Nagaland: One person died due to a landslip.

In response to the crisis, authorities have issued red alerts, evacuated residents from vulnerable areas, and initiated relief operations. The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued heavy rainfall in the region, raising concerns about further flooding and landslides.
